Talk about a quirky place! With its mile-high mountain top location, lively main street and interesting history, Jerome, Arizona is that and more. Located on the side of a mountain about 40 minutes from Sedona, high above the Verde Valley, the historic ghost town of Jerome is known as an old hippie community complete with art galleries, shops, restaurants and bars and lots of janky old buildings. Oh and the town of Jerome may or may not have ghosts and haunted hotels! If you’re going to Jerome, Arizona and need a hotel, I’ve got you covered! While they’re aren’t a ton of hotels, we discovered a few nice Jerome Arizona hotels on our recent visit.

If you don’t have time to read the entire post, the best Jerome Arizona hotels are: Connor Hotel of Jerome, The Clinkscale Hotel and The Jerome Grand Hotel. I’ll go into each in more detail below. All these hotels may definitely possibly be haunted!

Before I get into the hotel specifics, I’ll tell you that the drive up to Jerome is quite the ride. You’ll get an incredible view and the higher you climb the better the mountain view. But, the road is super windy and if you don’t like heights, you may have some trouble!! The drive up Mingus mountain is not for wimps. But it is totally worth it 

Jerome Arizona Hotels: The Connor Hotel of Jerome

Originally built way back in the late 1800’s, the Connor Hotel and completely remodeled and updated in the late 20th century, the Connor Hotel of Jerome has quite the storied past and is one of the best Jerome Arizzona hotels for sure. If these walls could talk I’m sure you’d hear lots of juicy conversations about booze, card games, maybe even boozy card games and all the other types of things that go along with that type of behavior. People had fun back in the day at the Connor! 

Off and on, all the way up to the 1970’s it was fairly well known as the sort of place where you probably wouldn’t take your mother and could certainly have a great time. Stay here today and I’m sure there’s still plenty of fun to be had, albeit maybe a little more respectable…and then again, maybe not – it depends on your idea of respectable. 

If you stay at the Connor Hotel, you’re in for a treat with quaint rooms, period furnishings and updated amenities like an in-room mini fridge and free wifi – this ain’t some cheap hotel! Some of the room details are even original so you’ll get that truly historic feel here. The hotel is conveniently located above the Spirit Room Bar. When we were there the bar was pretty lively and I imagine it only gets more so as the night goes on. The hotel has rooms directly above the bar and on the opposite side overlooking the valley so if you’re a light sleeper, choose a room on the other side.  

While the Connor doesn’t have as much ghost history as the Jerome Grand Hotel, it’s tough to say what you can expect here but you will have a great view of the valley or downtown. Your stay may or may not involve paranormal activity! 

Jerome Arizona Hotels: The Cinkscale Hotel 

Another historic hotel in Jerome is the Clinkscale Hotel. This baby was built back in 1899 and has been completely updated. It both oozes with historic charm and feels ultra modern all at once. The ambiance of this historic building is fantastic. The lobby bar and restaurant are situated on the lower level of the hotel while upstairs are the guest rooms. All the guest rooms are historically upscale – is that a thing? They have that old world charm but are super luxurious, uniquely decorated and have modern amenities.

Downstairs, hang out with a cocktail in the bar before a delicious dinner at the mile high grill. The menu feels modern with sandwiches like the roasted turkey french dip and the artesian grilled cheese and roasted tomato poblano soup. The nice restaurant there are also fresh seafood specialties like grilled shrimp with atomic horseradish! And they serve breakfast here so you can grab breakfast on your way out. Plus check out their brunch. The chicken & biscuits look so good!

Jerome Arizona Hotels: Jerome Grand Hotel

Formerly a hospital, the Jerome Grand Hotel opened in 1996. If you’ve heard of the “haunted hotel” in Jerome, this one is it. Back in the day when this building was the United Verde Hospital, more than 9000 people died here. That’s a lot of dead people and many believe their spirits remain in the hotel to this day. 

We went by the hotel when we were in Jerome recently, but didn’t stay here. I’m way too uptight to stay somewhere that’s potentially haunted. No FREAKIN way!! And I don’t even necessarily believe in ghosts! But when so many people have reported strange paranormal-ish activity, the creepy-ness factor is just way too high for this chick. 

There’s so much speculation about ghost activity here that the Travel Channel came here and filmed an episode of Ghost Adventures. Strange things happened during filming. Doors slammed shut among other creepy things! Weird. If you are into this kind of thing then you’ll want to know that the 3rd floor is where a lot of the paranormal shenanigans take place. 

We talked to more than a few people who either had first hand experience with all the ghost business or related stories to us from people they personally knew who did. The Jerome Grand Hotel evidently has some kind of ledger people log their paranormal experiences in. And it fill up rather quickly. 

Since we didn’t stay here, I can’t say whether the place is or is not a haunted hotel. But there’s enough evidence for me to say nah, I’ll pass!! Others who are super into ghosts travel to Jerome specifically to stay here! So if you’re a ghostbuster, this is the perfect place for you! And all ghosts aside, the historical aspects of the building are super cool if you’re into history like me. 

The Jerome Grand Hotel is a full service hotel with front desk operating 24 x 7.

There’s also an onsite restaurant and bar. The Asylum Restaurant has an upscale menu and is open Wednesday – Sunday. One other huge selling point for the Jerome Grand Hotel is the incredible views if offers! You have to see these insane views to believe them! 

Jerome Arizona Hotels Are Less Expensive

For the most part, staying at a hotel in Jerome AZ versus Sedona will save you money. We found the hotel prices in Jerome to be a lot cheaper than places in Sedona. You can get a great deal at one of the hotels here. Affordable accommodations are hard to come by in popular areas. Even very, very basic hotels in Sedona are over $200 per night and that’s at a bare minimum! 

Staying in one of the historic inns here in Jerome makes sense if you plan to do a long day of sightseeing in the area. Touring local attractions  like the Jerome State Historic Park and the nearby Tuzigoot National Monument might tire you out, so being able to stay at a great hotel in Jerome will be super convenient. In town you can also check out the Jerome Sliding Jail, the Holy Family Catholic Church.

If you don’t want to stay in Jerome, Cottonwood, AZ is a nice little town between Sedona and Jerome and it’s budget friendly, too! It’s central location is perfect. If you decide to stay in Cottonwood or elsewhere, be sure to make a day trip to Jerome. You’ll experience wonderful views, unique shopping on Main Street and of course you can explore some potentially haunted places while you’re there.
