Boca Raton Breakfast

Lucky me! I recently got to spend time in Boca Raton, Florida. Boca is truly a beautiful city that I love to visit.   As you know if you’ve read the blog, I go to Boca quite a bit to visit my son who goes to school there.    If you’ve read the blog you also know that I’m a huge restaurant afficianado. I love to try new food. I love to experience new-to-me restaurants wherever I go. And, I especially like a great meal that won’t break the bank. Finding a restaurant that is good AND on the inexpensive side can be elusive in pricy Boca, but Flakowitz Boca fit the bill. **This is NOT a sponsored post or affiliate post in any way.  It’s just my opinion of an awesome Boca Raton breakfast. **

SIXTH BOROUGH

I knew what I wanted. I wanted to experience the quintessential New York style diner. Only I wasn’t in New York. I was in South Florida. Boca Raton, FL, to be exact.  Lucky for me, Boca has some great options for those looking for New York style cuisine. You might be asking yourself “why would there be New York style food in South Florida?” Well. For those of you that don’t know,  there are a TON of New Yorkers that visit and live in Boca Raton, FL.

In fact, there are so many New Yorkers in Boca, that it’s sometimes known as the sixth borough. So in addition to the 5 boroughs in NYC: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island, we can add Boca Raton!

When we were in NYC last year (omg a year already!! CAN’T WAIT to go back) we all wanted to go to the famous Katz deli but we somehow ran out of time. With so many other fabulous things to do in NYC, we under-estimated how much time everything would take and unfortunately,  Katz’s didn’t make the cut.  So in Boca on this trip, I decided to make sure that a  New York style deli did not elude me once again.

BOCA RATON BREAKFAST

In Boca, according to locals, Flakowitz is  THE place to go for breakfast. What looks like an ordinary diner is actually much, much more. Flakowitz has 1 restaurant in Boca, 1 in nearby Boynton and 1 in Wellington.  Open daily from 7-3, come for breakfast, lunch or something in between.  Their menu   is massive, with all kinds of delectable options.  This is how to do a Boca Raton breakfast!

The Boca location is situated in a little standalone, unassuming building in the parking lot of a strip mall. Don’t be fooled into thinking that what’s inside will be as mundane as the outside of the building. Rather, I think the unimpressive-ness of the building itself is because they pour everything into the food!

The food at Flakowitz comes in many varieties. There’s breakfast, lunch and brunch selections, a deli case full of traditional deli items with a Jewish vibe:   think matzo ball soup. whitefish. chopped liver. pastrami. herring in cream sauce.  They also have a case with all sorts of decadent desserts.

Also to note is that they do a good take-away business. Lots of people popped in, grabbed bagels & the fixins and quickly slipped out. Some patrons didn’t even come inside, instead opting to take advantage of the walk up window to grab their “to-go” items.   You can grab a dozen bagels for around $13-super easy Boca Raton breakfast-lazy style!  How easy is that?

This place is popular. Opened back in the 1990’s, it’s still appears to be a local favorite judging by all the people waiting for tables during our visit.

BOCA RATON BREAKFAST = FOOD COMA

As I scoured the busy diner, I noticed that almost every person there could’ve been straight out of Brooklyn. They just had the look of a New Yorker.  I’m sure many were transplants- heading South to escape the brutal Northern Winters was a common theme from folks we talked to.   And, all were looking for the comfort and familiarity of home. They found it at Flakowitz and I found a new favorite in the 6th borough!

We were hungry when we got there.  My lanky son is always hungry but can’t put much food away. Really his eyes are way bigger than his stomach. He’s like a toddler that has to eat small and frequent meals because he gets full so fast.

He was really eyeing the gorgeous pastrami but ultimately settled on the breakfast “sandwich”. Let me just say I was not prepared for the quantity of food that would arrive at our table. The sandwich consisted of egg, bacon, cheese piled high on a toasted bagel with a generous side of perfectly crispy home fries.  Was this really a single Boca Raton breakfast or a meal for a small family?

BEST BOCA RATON BREAKFAST – SUGAR & SPICE

But wait, there’s more! He needed a little sugar with his savory, so ordered a side of flapjacks. Yep,  I knew there was no possible way he was eating all this wonderful food but I didn’t protest. He would eat it sooner or later. Those flapjacks would make a wonderful late night snack while he’s burning the midnight oil . You know all college students are night owls, right?!

Well those flapjacks were indeed mighty lonely on the side plate because they barely got a nod. All eyes were focused on the behemoth that was the bagelwich.  He ate exactly half.

THE EVERYTHING

I, on the other hand, know my limits.  I know that while everything on the menu appeals in some way or another including the corned beef hash, the eggs benny and the decadent cinnamon French toast.   I had to make a decision.   I ultimately went with the make-your-own omelet-veggie style.

Boca Raton Breakfast Omlette and Bagel

And,  of course I had to try a famed NY style bagel with my omelet.   The Everything bagel with salmon cream cheese was, well – EVERYTHING.  Chewy, tangy, perfectly seasoned goodness topped with the most perfect salmon cream cheese evah.  I indulged.   Flakowitz Boca delivered.

Next time you’re in Boca Raton, hit up Flakowitz Boca for some seriously scrumptious food at affordable prices.  Made to order for you in South Florida, it will take you back to New York!  You’ll love your breakfast in Boca!
