snowy mountain town

Updated 9/19/2020

When I think of traditional Christmas, my mind goes to snowy, small town America.  Maybe it’s because I’m from the Mid-West and we almost always have a white Christmas; and it’s usually cold, so that’s what a traditional Christmas looks like to me.  In thinking about where I’d really like to spend a few days at Christmastime, somewhere snowy came to mind.  Somewhere with a true winter vibe.  There’s a lot of places that fit the bill, but I wanted somewhere special & unique.   I’d been to Jackson Wyoming when I was younger. It really is a quaint, gorgeous little town, surrounded by picturesque mountains with absolutely mind-blowing scenery.   There’s plenty to do in Jackson Hole at Christmastime and really so many things to do in Jackson Hole in Winter, period.  Whether you’re spending the holidays in Jackson Hole, heading to Jackson Hole in Winter or cruising out to Jackson for a Summer vacation, there’s always plenty of things to do in Jackson Hole.

Why go to Jackson Hole?

For one, it’s a great small town atmosphere.   In fact,  Jackson Hole was recently named one of America’s “20 Best Small Towns for Christmas” by Country Living magazine.  Picture beautiful snow-covered mountains, lots of skiing and getting cozy in front of the fireplace.  Secondly, it doesn’t get much prettier than the natural beauty around Jackson.  If you’re a mountain lover like me, Jackson’s the spot for you.  Wait until you see the majesty of the Grand Tetons!

What’s There to Do in Jackson Hole, Wyoming?

Jackson also offers endless winter activities.   There is simply so much to do in Jackson in Winter.  You can experience everything from snowmobiling to downhill skiing to cross country skiing to horse riding through the snow.  Even if you’re not into doing a bunch of activities, what’s so great about Jackson in Winter is that you can do nothing at all except enjoy the beautiful scenery.  How about an authentic sleigh ride through the snow covered mountains?!  Doesn’t that sound absolutely incredible?  Especially if you cap off the ride with a dip in the HOT TUB!!

Jackson Wyoming is located in Western Wyoming between Grand Teton National Park & Yellowstone National Park.  Go to Jackson and you’ll have the opportunity to visit two incredible national parks in one trip.

Is Jackson Hole and Jackson the Same Thing?

Jackson Hole”  refers to the entire valley beginning six miles south of Yellowstone National Park following the Snake River south to Hoback Junction.  When people mention “Jackson“, that commonly refers to the main town or downtown area of the valley.

What Is the weather like in Jackson?

The weather fluctuates quite a bit, depending on the season.  As you can see from the temperature chart below,  Winters can be cold!  Summers are just about perfect in my book, with average highs in the seventies & low eighties.

From their website: Many of the museums full mount game trophies, which were taken from around Jackson Hole, can still be seen – some even in front of their original painted dioramas. In addition to these indigenous animals, there are numerous others from around the world, many of which were collected by us.
Most of the antique cowboy artifacts also come from Wyoming and many have historical significance; Hank William’s 1800’s buffalo coat that he wore on the Lone Wolf album; two Harrison Crandall colorized photographs taken in Grand Teton National Park in the forties; and eight original Edward Curtis portrait photogravures of American Indians taken circa 1890. Our largest gun is an .82 caliber rampart gun from India forged in the 1700’s.

Beef, Elk, Buffalo.  Whether you want to eat the meat or view the animal trophies, they’ve got you covered.  Not recommended for vegetarians  This place is a serious carnivore’s delight.  Dig in!

What About Jackson Hole Lodging?  Where Should We Stay?

You’ll be in the center of the action if you choose to stay in the town of Jackson.  If you like being within walking distance to a lot of shops, bars and restaurants, then you’ll enjoy staying in town.

My top pick is the Mountain Modern in Jackson because I like to be in center of town.   Plus the price is definitely right at $117-$135 for week before Christmas and there’s a mini fridge in room + indoor  pool & hot tub.  Yasss!

Mountain Modern

Or, if you’re looking to use up Marriott points,  stay at Springhill Suites.

Springhill Suites by Marriott

I like the roominess that Springhill Suites offer plus the complimentary breakfast.  This is a newer Marriott in a great location near the square, with underground parking and an outdoor hot tub.  What’s not to love?!
